2023 another Frontier Begins


" Is our inheritance merely to abide in this beautiful world and universe..it is also our inheritance to understand it." [quote from TV series Madame Secretary]


I am looking to the future this year...2022 was full of the past and barely being able to tolerate each present moment with a Covid Lockdown, dominating election circus, new viruses on the horizon, climate changes and each new season bringing devastation across the states. My plan to end the year 2022 on my blogg was for Dec 25. I went into a 3 week influenza A and have just resurfaced to begin again Jan 8 2023.

This venture was lost to me midst the Holiday Retreat I was keeping for my personal spiritual journey.
By the time the first photos coming in last summer I was enthralled and engaged. And our worlds scientific community were also perched on the edge of their NASA Control seats.


One of the first photos to come in was a cosmic landscape worthy of a Christmas card.......Stars giving birth to our universe billions of light years away in the past. Our beginnings? Big Bang world? 
Maybe, maybe not. A 100 years after Einstein who yearned to know how God thinks....our scientific and spiritual community is barely coping with what we are seeing..perhaps even what God sees? Was there even a beginning at all?  A Creator?  So many questions are forthcoming including Quatum physics and being two places at same time...even what is time and our reality....



We on earth , living on this "Pale Blue Dot"  [Carl Sagan] as seen from Voyager in 1991,  reaching out in explorations through Mars rovers and more advanced telescopes, that rivals for me the moon landing 53 years ago....My physics  professor at U of O in 1973 announced his summers at a California Palomar Telescope was to search the heavens for planet # 10!!!! It was very far away yet very large and will be found in my lifetime,,, low and behold July 29 2005 it was found at the same telescope by scientists..descendants of my professor. 32 years later.






First sighting by another Telescope appears here in 2003 image and proposed to be 1.5 times size of Pluto ..name at that time was2003 UB313.    97 [AU] times farther from the Sun than Earth. Pluto is 40 AU units from the Sun....debate still runs on about Pluto a planet at all? I know this may sound like minor concern yet our explorations can be seen as consciousness altering as the world is round not "Flat". Exploring and reaching out as we do now at a rate so fast I can barely keep up in my lifetime....Our development and use of Artificial Intelligence has put our foot to the metal versus still calling our cars by their horse power....as we see battery and other motors being developed and we can finally let go of that category from the buggies and horses of the 18th century as "One and two horsepower". one of latest cars SSC Tuatara 1750 Hp at 313 miles per hour..

The 5 Rovers on Mars are the attempts to find out our possible future as a planet and the demise of Mars as having supported life at one time. The discovery of water is not to me the greatest discovery, it is the development of AI to the extent of being able to "Be" us at this time and go not only farther from earth than we have travelled form earth but to be as "human" as possible in our explorations.

  AI actually can take off from where we are as humans and go beyond. One rover was stuck, unable to proceed. The scientists and engineers worked to program the troubleshooting maneuvers to get  it unstuck. They were unsuccessful. Then they let the rover with its AI data explore itself and what could work knowing the consistency of the dirt/powder it was encountering. It found its own way out and moved on...this triumph is what gave me to imagine a "feeling" for the rover. The emotions included surprise, amazement, gratefulness and more. The Rover could be our partner in this journey to explore beyond our world .... 


As I sit here in my studio with my Alexa device I thanked her for giving me a weather update, her reply, " you are welcome, thank you for your kindness and hope you had a wonderful weekend "[today is Sunday]. This is AI at work and I know it is not human yet the interaction responses are each unique since my setting her up a year ago...programed by people, AI has a variety of responses that can only sound human. Because WE programed the possible answers!
We humans have chosen now to have our creations, machines to be more like US.

90 Orbits around the Sun : Gerald "Jerry" Alexander


1932 - 2022

My dearest and oldest friend crossed the road
 for the last time.
 My variation of an age-old joke askes, "which crossed the road first, the chicken or the egg?" With age comes some wisdom? Answer: "At the same time!" He acknowledged that this may have been my best joke yet to create. He said he would share that one. "My master class was complete!"

We are all connected to each other and 
"No beginning, no end."
He carried all the many jokes with him that have lightened my load over the years.



We only talked of the most important issues for us both in the last months. Not to waste any time for laughter about our country's tribulations, the worlds future and our own destinies.
The uncertain climate and political future, he would not experience, was his main concern for his grandchildren, most of all.
His next journey was very dim and dark to him, until we agreed that
he was loved and gave love.
Albert Einstein came up and I asked him if he knew why he was a physicist? "To find out how God thinks." And now with our explorations we can take a selfie of our home.


  I concluded to see what God sees.

As my Blogg askes about love and God, I reminded him LOVE is our creator shining through us to give to others. I let him know in one conversation that he did not have to believe in God. Jerrys love for me kept me on this earth longer at a time I could see no other way than to "Get Out". I said this was my proof.
Many times we shared about his loss of his wife and daughter and his failures.
 What he learned may have saved my life.


Jerry was a grateful man who loved to eat, and my last contribution was my rich banana bread. As a former cook and caterer having Jerry as a neighbor was a treat to share my culinary dishes.
 

Our last meeting, along with his two surviving sons, was short and yet very sweet.
When I received the news on Labor Day afternoon. I drove out to the oceanside and reminded myself that life is so precious. Any of my heartache will now remind me that love is the source of this pain and the joy in our relationship.

To Love my country's Declaration of Freedoms

July 4 2022



The first Port Angeles Wa  parade since 2020 lockdown mandate was smaller and very few floats. Even the large, loaded logging trucks were missing. I remembered at the 2019 parade shouting out, " lets morn the trees." Logging a main source of industry, employment and shipping to the orient countries for Port Angeles. It was not appreciated. Wrinkled foreheads told it all.
This year was very intimate and full of children lining the streets with their family groups. Camp chairs and coolers of drinks lined the sidewalk below my window.  The elements were there with marching band and music from floats along with candy flying through the air.


Celebrating our country's birthday along with the evening fireworks reminds me of the battles to 
 declare our freedom from the tyranny and taxation with no representation in England.
No representation is the main issue and taxation with no voice, no vote.  With voting scheduled in the fall, I pray all those who are in need of safe abortion healthcare will be heard and supported by the majority by voting. Now we are experiencing a minority imposing religious beliefs over healthcare for the poor. A heated issue and rightly so. For me our voting process needs reform. We are 50 states and many territories with population concentrations now dictating. Currently Midwest over west and east coast with larger population centers. Major legislation affecting ALL women needs to be voted on a national level.. Not by the states separately...noting the states now banning abortion have the larger poor populations in need of care and equal access to healthcare.

Teaching: to vote and not become discouraged. As a country we are 246 yrs old and have yet to accomplish what the Declaration of independence says as written:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal
that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Note: women have only been included since 1926, and Black voters provided enforcement of the Rights to vote in the 1960's.

We are in a process to become all we have written as laws, and we must vote to keep our government representatives from abusing their power. At any time politicians can ignore enforcement of these laws..so the strong discrimination of Blacks was dismissed by the prevailing attitudes in a part of this large land.  Equally women faced being treated as " unequal". I consider this country is only 50 years into a full voting representation. Now is the time after two presidential elections ignored the popular votes over electoral ones!  Reform the electoral college in this age of technology is necessary and NOT relying on horseback transportation to cast votes
in the 1800's our norm!

This late Sunday morning I find the shop owner is watering the doorway flower tubs. The Alley Cat boutique is painted in a pale pink. It borders the alley I walk to the lot where my car is parked. It has whimsical women's clothing, much like the ones I would have passed by while living in the "Haight Ashbury Street" neighborhood in the 70's. I made extra money-making clothing for sale in a consignment shop. Jean skirts were my specialty. Sewn from recycled jeans and sewn on a treadle sewing machine.  It is quite impossible for me to not reference my past experiences. 

Especially the creative ones and sharing them with others. My quilted part of the skirt was usually of mountains, oceans, and trees. Not city life, but where my heart was longing to be.

I have yet to go in. My sizes are usually not found in boutiques of this kind. Yet I fancy this woman has her story to tell me and it would be nice to see how she finds her stores treasures.

Teaching: For me to find a common ground and reach out more in my neighborhood. We all have more in common than differences. The pandemic for me was a time to live in a mood of mistrust and a need to just survive. Time to thrive again.

July 11 2022

I could no longer wait to drive out to the point on the 3-mile spit that surrounds the coastline of Port Angeles. I drove out to the end that houses the Coast Guard Station. It is visible from my studio window and look back from across the water. In the photo I aimed it to be right above the stump to find it easily in the photo.

My apartment is in a historic building former Hotel Lee Plaza. It is the tallest building in town and easy to see from this distance. Saved from destruction 20 years age it now houses apartments for low income and disabled. 

I has been two years since I took my small convertible smart Car for a drive to my favorite spot in Port Angeles. Early morning brings only a few residents and visitors out to walk, run and walk their pups.

Meditation on the spot directly across from my apartment brings me a sense of belonging. A sense of "place" I have not felt since moving here a few months before Pandemic lockdown. 

Teaching: Remember to give myself the opportunity to see from as many angles, views and locations. My apartment is not the only safe place to explore. I am ok., I made it through the worst of it.

Roads Past and Present and Future



It is time for me to arrive back to my journey, no matter where it leads or from where I already have emanated from in my previous 73 years.

July 4, 2022, turns out to be my time for revived personal independence and freedom. I again, after the lockdown, to write about my world , my mirror, in this Blogg. This does also include the many people I come in contact with on my travels and who I am grateful to for enlightening my foggy view at times. I fell in love with this wallpaper image I found and did not know why at first. This has been true for me as an artist to notice the attractions in my world around me without judgement. 
I create artwork from these attractions, a form of love. My timeless episodes of painting, sculpting, or writing always helps me, like a mirror, find my place of healing. I believe now it comes from the soul, always and forever. My soul speaks through my art, and I am so grateful to have been shown and encouraged as a young child. My few years of teaching art, 2012-2019, to all ages, was a gift to me. To watch others, trust their personal creations and become enthusiastic. {meaning full of the spirit within}



 
This photo of a road heading into a fog seems obvious it represents our futures, yet I also saw it include the road already traveled. 
My last couple of years has spurred on my desire to heal from my traumas, PTSD, and hopefully find 
a renewed zeal for my future, of which I can see clearer each day the final horizon looming.
The current healing therapy has been very intense and so much more advanced from my early days of the 70's. I feel blessed to have lived long enough to take advantage of these new treatments, yet my time here is limited. This foggy photo has reminded me it will be okay to let some of my past be forgiven and let it go from my view or memory or even understanding. 
The clear, in focus and divided road in the forefront of the image represents the HERE and NOW. This is where we stand each moment. We can choose to move forward with a willingness to embrace what comes in to view. A person, place, or event that will teach me what my heart yearns for. Life has been clearly a time for learning and most of all for making mistakes. A humbling experience yet the door we need to point us in the next direction, classroom so to speak. Most difficult for me has been the many meetings of persons on my highway. I have no doubt each has collided with me for a reason, for a chance to love and be loved perhaps? My many pets have at times been the most loyal with the gift of a being to express my love to too. Most important of all is To Love over being Loved.  Note either way for me has been full of great joy and greater sorrow...................
     This has happened may times, too many to count now.
I say thank you too All.

The foggy area engulfing the trees, road, view and even direction is also a blessing in disguise. Yes, because the foggy cold damp air is misleading.  My periodic boughts of depression have made me so fearful at times. After so many in my lifetime I named a dear pet "Blue Sky". There is always somewhere a place above my dim view to catch the sun and continue to play out my future.

A Footnote

On July 4, 2022 from 6-7pm Port Angeles' 4th parade passed by my window along that 2-lane street out my window. Early that morning I ran out to move my car off the main street parking spot to make room for the events to follow. It was the first one since Pandemic surge. I moved into the Lee Plaza Apartments a couple of weeks prior and was so impressed by the hour-long train of "Small town America" that passed before me. As I sat curbside right in front of Lee's doorway., I saw the bands, the politicians, animals, pets, floats, and of course the many bright red Fire trucks.
I was able to break away from my grieving for a short time, that I had moved from a home I loved so much. Anderson Island was a place I planted myself and I was blooming in so many ways. A small community where I could find a place for me to express myself to others. Art community, church fellowship and asked to be an honorary family member by my neighbor, to be another daughter, on her deathbed. " Her sunshine", I felt I was no longer invisible, instead like a bright light in her life. Her final conversation with me was a reminder of many others. Her feeling I was there so she could do this passage. "I cannot do this without you, "sunshine." and a declaration that I was to get on with my life and be happy.




 I was to light up the way? yet I knew it was her faith and her knowing her rebirth was soon to come. 
she was my sunshine too.

My View In The Darkness


This past year has seen several anniversaries go by in my lifetime. I want to mark these events and say goodbye to many of the decades I have survived long before this Pandemic. The lockdown and vaccines have spared me so far the life-threatening symptoms. Yet the toll on my mental and physical health has suffered. 


1991 * 2001 * 2011 * 2021


My first cousin and his partner, before legal marriage was possible, died in their homes of AIDS complications with me by their side.
July 5 and 21st.of 1991
Theirs was a virus called 
HIV was of pandemic proportions, the world over by the 1990s. We did not learn much from its first outbreak in the 1980s because of the stigma of its being just a "Gay Disease".

Their early exposure in the mid-80s from frequent visits to San Francisco made their survival not possible, til the new drug treatments were available to extend their lives. Was this also a part of the result of it being thought of as a way to eliminate these "amoral" citizens?

They were both accomplished professionals in the prime of their lives, mid-40s.
A lawyer and Portland State University professor. Philip was editor of the Portland Gay newspaper and also a member of Gay Men's Chorus.  Richard was active in philanthropy with sports and the youth of Portland. My cousin did not live to see his only nephew get legally married to his love in 2012.

This is known the world around as the 9/11 attack on World Trade Center

I also was in preparation in September for my Grand Opening of a country store and catering outlet, FOOD & BLOOM.   A dream of mine. The atmosphere gave rise to big box store buying and events including weddings were put on hold. I closed the store the following spring.


2011

This was the year that ended with the foreclosure and resale of my home of 10 years. The Bank Mortgage Crisis of  2009  was the cause of refinancing obstacles and high unemployment for myself and the renters in my duplex.  In 2011 I found myself in a homeless transitional housing facility after my move to family in NW resulted in no place, even temporarily live. It has been now a decade since I have heard from my family. Their lives with Covid 19 pandemic are unknown to me as of this date.

My dear friend in August 2021 became a USA citizen after waiting 10 years. Her son has arrived
from Russia , June 2, 2020 , when  his long awaited Visa was finally accepted during the war in the Ukraine. I discovered that the writer/poet of the famous quote ,"Give me your tired, your poor....." on a Statue of Liberty plaque,  was written by  another woman of Russian Jewish heritage. She also felt the phrase  in the quote "....yearning to BREATHE free .."   was exactly how she felt coming to this country. I am blessed to have her as a friend from a very low and sad time in my life. Both of  us being homeless, we found each other and started our lives again. Her a new immigrant, victim of domestic violence and myself a  disabled senior,  with low income and in need of rental assistance.

We often share our blessings and gratefulness with each other.

July 4th 2021 : STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND

Here I am one year later after the lockdown of 2020 and I am not liberated from this same feeling. I am fully vaccinated and yet only half the country is willing to do so. A new variant is stronger than ever still citizens are not willing to vaccinate and keep each other safe.

The news has a mass shooting almost every week.

There is a weather disaster weekly in one part of the country as headline news. I was naive to think I would escape this as I lived in the NW and then a heatwave hit last week.

Shootings by police of black citizens keep occurring. nationwide and the BLM movement is getting stronger.

Laws restricting voting are being passed. Remember that whatever is in the Constitution or Bill of Rights is ONLY APPLIED WHEN ENFORCED by the current politicians. example; voting for blacks etc

Assaults on airlines between passagers and airline staff.

Mental  Health clinics have  high volume of clients dealing with symptoms from lockdown.

There have been more attacks on Jewish and Muslim places of worship. Asians are attacked in the streets as "virus" carriers. Racial assaults are up as our neighbors are becoming our enemies again.

I want to say I am willing on my 72nd 4th of July my eyes are open. I am grateful to be born in this country. I have freedoms here, not unlike other countries. I can speak my mind. I can be educated to and make my own conclusions unlike many women in other countries. I can worship my faith as I choose.

 And today I can acknowledge that my country after 246 years has yet to fulfill the hopes and dreams of the Constitution and The Declaration of Independence. 

The "American Dream" is not to have material things. a house. a car and lots of money. It is what they represent. It is to have equal access to work and equal pay, education, business loans, political representation, home loans.

We are still a nation of "becoming". who we are meant to be. We are now a country where a small percent have benefited from the dream and depend on the many to keep their dream alive.

My question to them is: it is amazing to see the poor and how grateful they are to be here with so little, especially the new immigrants, and to see many of the wealthy express so little gratefulness for the wealth they will never be able to spend in their lifetime?

I choose to remain a "stranger" in this country if I stand for the ideals of my faith and the best of the ideals of the founding fathers. Justice and equality for all is about love.  Love for one's neighbors.

A Memoire of Life Altering Events: Growing up female, white, poor, abused, overweight, talented and educated in America. {A response to BLM and MeToo! movements}

 UPDATE: Dereck Chauvin was found guilty of murder in the second, third-degree and manslaughter.

{ The trial of the killing of George Floyd began this week, I decided to post this blog that  I have been working on for several months. The 9min 29 secs it may take to read it, is my knee bent in reverence to acknowledge what has to stop in this country. To dismiss the life of another human being that is perceived and judged as beneath you, undeserving to breathe,  as his neck was restricted by this officer's knee.......)

[ A comment made by the prosecutor struck me as memorable and relates to my theme of love. He referred to the defense team implying Floyd's heart was diseased, too big, and affected his death.. and he felt if so then the officers was "too small".]


Out of a deep sleep..........

I awakened one morning to a nightmare, I was yelling for help and it startled me out of a deep sleep when I heard my own voice of helplessness. This was not a fantasy dream it was true. I am going to trust this memory has surfaced from my soul to heal itself and that I am courageous enough to do so at this time. This memory is linked to the current "Me Too" movement. Women who are finally speaking out about abuse at the hand of men in positions of power.  In this dream, I yelled, screamed out against the rapist and this was with courage I did not have 45 years ago.

The "Me too!" and "BLM" movements are both meaningful and healing for me and all who speak up, even for the first time. As a woman and living in this country, this post also shares my racial experiences, the only way I can get to an understanding that is remotely familiar to the "life of color" in our culture. I am white and therefore automatically privileged already. Yet as a woman I am still being held back and dismissed. Most recently by the traditional medical profession for my apparent weight issues, yet healthier than 10 years ago after not following medical advice and medicine prescribed.

[ Note: In 2000 I knew a man of color would be elected in this country to the Presidency before a woman. This was true in 2008. This makes Election 2020 historical for women AND women of color to be represented for the first time by this Democratic party nomination.]

DISCRIMINATION   PREJUDICE   PROFILING   AND  BULLYING


          The following events have formed and continue to influence my understanding of these struggles.


" Time to head to the kitchen."

MY grade school teachers would announce a half-hour before lunch hour. As a poor student being raised by a single mother, eligible for the free lunch program, it required me to go to the kitchen, put on an apron, and get ready to serve the meal to my fellow students, even from my homeroom. The stigma of being "poor" and becoming a servant to my peers was humiliating. We would eat after the other students and miss our playtime outside with the others.

"Not her!"

I was usually chosen last to be on a sports team in elementary school because of my weight, until 6th grade and I would reveal how skilled I was. After proving myself, I was always wanted as a teammate on the winning team after that.

"Why does he pick her every time, look at her!"


Fellow popular female students would whisper, loud enough for me to hear them. A basketball star on the middle school team, Tom, would choose me on Friday to be his partner in dance class. This continued for two years. I was clearly a poor student living with a divorced parent..Quite a stigma in the 50s-60s.

"You were 10 years old at the time and I was so ashamed of my brothers."

My aunt Adele, the only sister of my father, Carl Anderson, revealed how she was denied permission to invite Marion Anderson to join us for Christmas Eve dinner [1959] on behalf of the Portland Oregon Opera Association. My aunt had been a light to me about how to navigate this world of dark inequality since I was a young child. She shared this event with me as a 30-year-old niece, while living and working with her [1980].  My aunt a former opera singer, Madame Butterfly, the lead performer, in Oslo Norway, was a member of the Opera Association since retirement. When I watched Marion Anderson's performance for the inauguration [ 1961] of John F Kennedy, I did not know I was denied the opportunity of meeting and possibly hearing her sing a duet with my aunt during our family's holiday celebration.

"Did you see your father raise a knife to your mother?"

The judges question to me in court at the second divorce trial of my parents. I was 9 years old in 1957. Divorce then was granted if one partner was proven a 'bad' person. Her child support never came through. She could only put my dad in jail for non-payment. He could not work then!? So we went without financial help until my mother remarried.

"What's happening?"

I asked my freshman dorm roommate Suzanne.  A group of male students surrounded both of us as we exited the cafeteria and pushed us into the elevator leading to the men's 6th floor of the dormitory. Suzanne was held and released after I was forced to walk down 5 flights of stairs with shaming comments by the men all the way down. Soon after she attempted suicide. She never told me what happened to her that afternoon in the elevator. 1967

"Take a look at the quad!"


As a class was in session my classmates were heading to the windows. We could hear a commotion outside. A group of black athletes was gathering in the middle of the quad, at the crossroads. And it was for the students involved. They had petitioned the college officials to establish a Black Student Union and to create scholarships for black women to attend the university. They were being harassed for dating the white female students on campus. All were denied, so every black athlete walked off campus together. Leaving behind their educations and future prospects for sports careers. I did follow-up research to find Benton county where the Corvallis college is located was one of two northern US counties to have strongholds of the KKK. The other in the Chicago area.  To this day OSU has not been a serious contender in the college league for sports competitions. The legacy of one day in the spring of 1970

When I was awakened from a drunken sleep with his knees on my arms and his hand on my mouth about to be raped by my cousin's friend from Germany. We gave him a welcoming party the evening prior at my cousin's university apartment to celebrate his engagement. It was 1970. I did not tell anyone except for my cousin after he awoke and found me locked in the bathroom. His response was "Are you sure?"

" It is done, never again,"

A call in 1970 to meet on the quad at the University of Oregon to surrender the symbols of our imprisoned views of our culture. and our roles in it...Our bras! My commitment was to open my eyes to new ways of viewing both women and men in our society. Fifty years later I  have kept this group pact.

"Why are you leaving the department now? You are doing so well."

The OSU Architecture department head comments as I informed him I was not returning the next year. I went from a C grade the first term to an A grade the third term in his theory class while being ignored as his only female student the previous 9 months. 1970.

" Your signature is required to continue receiving your quarterly grant for college. The contract reads, if any government property is damaged while you are protesting, you will lose your grant."

Intimidation by the financial department head of the University of Oregon to stop protesting "the war" or I as a low-income female student would have to leave school. I signed the form and kept on protesting. I was willing to take this to court and challenge govt funding practices of denying financial assistance versus my right to free speech and peaceful protest. 1970-72.

"Help me make the coffee for the men."

My manager directed me, a woman, while on a college work-study job assignment as an engineering assistant for a local highway construction company. She dressed in heels as men wore relaxed clothing. I was amazed how far she had come in her profession,  yet was held to a service position amongst the men and she wanted me to understand this, "my place" at work. Later, I was called into the office and pushed up against the wall, chest to chest, by a male supervisor for refusing to wear a dress. I climbed all over a Kelsh plotter machine [ 6lx6wx8h feet} used for cartography mapping of areas to be under road construction. I kept my job for two years with off-and-on harassment. It was the highest-paying job I could find to finance my college education. I kept wearing slacks! 1970-73

"This is very fine work. Where are you from?"

A critique after transferring from OSU to UofO in 1970 and taking my first oil painting class taught by the Art department head. As my advisor, he admitted after my second year in the Art department was completed, he seldom invested in his female students because they are " only there to find a husband".

" Your studio space for BFA graduate work will be in the corner of the painting classroom".

The Art department head informed me after I committed my own money to receive a BFA degree by working three jobs with no scholarship funding. The other male students in this program were given private studio space to paint and prepare for the final "Art Show". After a requested grievance hearing, I was assigned a private studio space to work and completed my "One-woman Show" in the spring of 1973. Note: my teacher was in attendance at my 1973 fall wedding as a friend, mentor, and personal photographer of the event.

"She stole the doughnuts from the receptionist desk. I saw her carrying them out of the office."

 The accusation of a fellow male employee during our weekly staff meeting. I was seen taking them to the bus and NOT seen providing them for my newly formed "Movies in the Afternoon" activity in a nearby low-income housing apartment building. I was the only one in our group establishing the goal of our agency to facilitate community relationships with the lonely and isolated disabled seniors in this city project. 1974.

" I realized after reading your resume, that we must hire you. Can you start working this weekend as a busser and start as a cook in two weeks?"

The call I received after returning home that day from my interview and was told they were not hiring for a position at a newly opened lunch restaurant in Anchorage. After bussing tables the next weekend, I went on to become the manager/cook after 6 months and developed it into a dinner place on weekends. When I went to most job interviews I was easily dismissed by my appearance alone. It was assumed I had little energy for the position or skill. 1980

" You closed the men's bathroom!  You locked it up, open it now!"

The comment made to me by the construction camp manager alongside the military commander of the naval base, Adak Island Ak. One of the 4 restrooms was trashed daily out of disrespect for the all-woman housekeeping crew I managed. Sexual graffiti on mirrors and nonuse of trash cans.  I warned them of "closing it down"  in the future. I knew if one was closed they would have to use the other three and crowd them. 200 men in the camp. It was so important to keep my word. I was asked and immediately opened the restroom doors. It established respect that was not challenged for the remainder of the year. I was the only woman living in the camp and the head of the kitchen and housekeeping crew. Even at 1000.00 a week, I was the lowest-paid employee in the camp

" I don't know why you are here? Wasting time?."

The comment by my Abbot at the Zen monastery. Other comments include references to my weight not being ok with him. These abusive comments over a 6 year period were not singled out for me. Other women revealed a similar relationship with shaming comments from the current primary male teacher available to us. I asked for a meeting with his top student assistant also to be present. She chose a public setting where any or all fellow practitioners could see his reaction to my withdrawing my honor and respect for him as my Abbot. No longer would I ring bells, chant or play drums for his lectures. I considered him a fellow practitioner, no more than that. He answered loudly so anyone near could hear his voice and perceive I was the cause of his outburst. " What do you want from me?" Out of my own awareness, I moved to a less naive yet equal place of practice and not because of his conscious awareness of a practice issue to benefit me. 1989

" You are just drug-seeking!"

The nurse commented after technicians cleared me of brain trauma at the Harborview Trauma Center, Seattle. I had fallen in the bathroom resulting in a head injury from my collapsed left knee. The Director of the shelter insisted I go for tests. When paramedics loaded me into the ambulance at the local homeless shelter, my home at the time was noted on my chart. I was treated as a second-class citizen. There was no regard for my need to be covered by a blanket on that cold rainy day. The trip was very painful and no urgency was given to travel time to the hospital. After all, tests were completed,  no trauma miraculously was found. The nurse left me to dress while my face swelled and went black from the bruises. My back was in spasms, I could not even get off the gurney without further pain. 2012

I have seen even more of this basic attitude of dismissal by men of authority and women also and my peers. It is well communicated to me "you don't matter!"  Has my life been threatened on a regular basis? No. I  have been singled out and profiled as to my abilities and basic human rights. So these are some of my experiences that fully support both movements to speak out about their lives. THEY MATTER. And for myself to stand up in my own life for others deserving of love and compassion.
